The Last Thursday on Neighbours…

Mackenzie Hargreaves

It’s very hard to say goodbye to Mackenzie…

Mackenzie has been busy helping Yashvi with Toadie and Mel’s wedding preparations.  She was struck with sadness when she saw a gift wrapped in the same paper as a gift to her and Hendrix.  After some time, she was able to breathe through it and accept that throughout the rest of her life, she will always be reminded of her lost love.  I am glad they aren’t rushing through and glossing over Mackenzie’s loss or forgetting her in the final week, as she had such a big story recently.  She deserves to be a big part of the finale.  She has been one of the best Neighbours characters ever created and I will miss watching her so much.  I am sure Georgie Stone will go on to do amazing things.

Shane and Izzy

Bouncer – the best TV dog! (The Mirror)

As expected, Shane and Izzy spent the day flirting with each other before kissing rather passionately in his car.  Izzy backed off – eventually – but not before Kyle saw them at it and saw her making a hasty exit.  See, we all knew she hadn’t mended her ways and that she was going to break Mal’s heart.  Also, let’s just take a moment to acknowledge that Shane has named his car, Bouncer.  We remember you, Bouncer.  We love you.

Paul and Terese #Praise

Terese lost her temper with Glen (Metro)

So, things were understandably tense after Terese’s outburst.  Paul left the house somewhat shell shocked while Glen looked out.  Roxy probed Terese over her feelings but Terese denied still being in love with Paul.  Unable to leave things be, Roxy went ahead and told Paul to tell Terese the truth of his love for her.  Proving that his feelings really are genuine, Paul refused, not wanting to upset Terese’s life after everything he had already done to her.

However, it was Glen who put a halt to things in the end, realising that he would always be second best to Paul.  Warning her against reuniting with Paul, as he would only hurt her and suggesting that River Bend would still be a good business option, Glen stepped out of Terese’s life.

Lucy, Chris, Annie and The Great Migration

Chris Pappas back in the day… (Metro)

Chris Pappas arrived in Erinsborough with Annie, the daughter he and Lucy share.  He now has a beard and a pony tail and so much more confidence than he ever had when he lived on Ramsay Street.  He is dating a chef called Tony and is so much happier with his life.  It is lovely see this development of such a beloved character, even if it is only a brief glimpse.  And I love that Paul still calls him Freckles.

As the family shared a celebration, Leo announced that he too would be joining them in New York.  For the first time in his life, all of Paul’s kids will be living in the same place.  But I still don’t want Paul to go.  I want him to stay in Ramsay Street with Terese!

The Ramsay Street History Book

Chloe’s memories are full of Elly… (Digital Spy)

Chloe shared her memories of moving to Ramsay Street, all of them caught up with her love for Elly, including the way she supported her when she was diagnosed with Huntington’s, their first kiss and her heartbreak when they called time on their relationship, deciding to put their friendship first.  We were treated to flashbacks throughout.  There is something I quite like about Chloe seeming to have completely forgotten that she was ever married to Pierce.  I really couldn’t stand him.

Later, Chris gathered with some of the Ramsay Street gang and shared his own memories of living in Erinsborough.  He told them of his journey towards accepting himself and we saw a flashback to him coming out to best friend, Andrew Robinson.  As he talked about his experiences, Chloe and Mackenzie in particular could relate.

Chloe opened up about her conflicting feelings for Elly.  Mackenzie, Roxy, Yashvi and Chris all encouraged her to go for it and be happy.  Yes!  Go, Chloe!  Be happy!  #Chelly!  I believe in you!

Name Drops: Elly Conway, Bouncer, Hendrix Grayson, Andrew Robinson

Arrivals: Chris Pappas, Annie Robinson

Departures: None

Neighbours: May I Return (To the Beginning)…?

Tragically, the Neighbours cast and crew, not to mention us as devoted fans are counting down the days until our beloved show comes to a hopefully temporary end on 1st August, with a huge double episode.  But by now, most of us will have heard of some major cast returns and some of them are SERIOUSLY exciting!

Harold Bishop (Ian Smith)

Ian Smith as Harold Bishop
(Metro)

The first person to be mentioned, several weeks ago was Harold Bishop, such a classic character that the café is still named after him, long after his departure.  He is so loved that the show wasn’t even capable of killing him off without bringing him back to life!  Nobody would ever be able to forget the beautiful love story that was Harold and Madge (Anne Charleston) – the humour and the tragedy.  It could not end without him.  If only Lou Carpenter (Tom Oliver), his old sparring partner was returning with him!

Joe Mangel (Mark Little)

Mark Little as Joe Mangel
(BBC)

We will also see Joe Mangel (Mark Little) with whom I am very much hoping we might also see his daughter Skye and her wife, Lana (Stephanie Mackintosh and Bridget Neval).  Joe was always a loveable character and it was one of the show’s most memorable and tragic episodes when wife, environmentalist, Kerry was shot and killed.  We saw Skye, a police officer return a couple of years ago a marry teenage love, Lana, finally getting closure on the relationship that started all those years and had to end abruptly due to homophobia.  It was the show’s second gay marriage and really showed just how far Neighbours has come in terms of diversity and celebrating the LGBTQ community.

The Kennedy Family

Benjamin McNair as Mal Kennedy
(Digital Spy)

There are so many iconic families on Ramsay Street and Neighbours are clearly doing their best to represent as many of them as possible in the characters they are bringing back, as well as making sure they keep the current, radiant cast shining.  It is a joy to hear that Mal Kennedy (Benjamin McNair) will be winging his way back to his parents from where he ‘lives’ in London.  If only Libby and Billy (Kym Valentine and Jesse Spencer) would drop in too.  They could pose for a new portrait!  My wife has been tuning in for these last few months and she was shocked to see it still hanging in Karl and Susan’s lounge!

Also on her way back to Erinsborough is Elly Conway (Jodi Anasta), Susan’s niece, prompting the hope that after everything they have been through over all these years, #Chelly might finally get their happy ever after.  I did like Chloe and Nicolette for a while and this Kiri seems quite nice but Chloe and Elly were the original couple.  Nobody ever quite moved on from them, did they?!  Next week, we will be seeing Pierce Greyson (Tim Robards) return, in line with his son Hendrix’s tragic diagnosis but let’s hope that doesn’t mean a reunion for him and Chloe because quite frankly that never worked for me.  Just saying.

#Chelly

The Rebecchi Family

Morgan Baker as Callum Rebecchi
(Digital Spy)

Poor Toadie has been through so much during his life on Ramsay Street.  He lost his first wife, Dee Bliss.  He found true love with Sonya until she died from cancer in possibly the saddest ever storyline the show has ever aired.  Then there was the whole Dee/Andrea insanity, which I was hooked on from start to finish!  And it has taken a respectful amount of time but he has finally found love again with Melanie Pearson.  So, it is lovely that his mother, Angie and his and Sonya’s son, Callum (Leslie and Morgan Baker) will be here for the end.

The Willis Family

Kate Kendall as Lauren Willis
(Digital Spy)

Paige Brennan (Olympia Valance) is also due to return again, although not with husband, Mark as far as we know.  I’m not the biggest Mark fan but with the Brennan family having made such a huge impact on the Street, it would have been amazing to see Mark and Tyler (and Tyler’s partner, Piper) reunite on screen with their siblings, Chloe and Aaron – not to mention Piper and half-sister Paige back together again.

However, Paige’s mother, Lauren Willis (Kate Kendall) will return!  And so will Ned Willis (Ben Hall), who has barely left.  Ned has got himself into quite a lot of bother recently, having cheated on girlfriend, Amy with Harlow.  He must take after his father.  Deciding he needs to start afresh, Ned decided to head off to Sydney but it has been confirmed that both he and ex-girlfriend – and clearly the love of his life – Yashvi Rebecchi (Olivia Junkeer) will both return for the finale.  So, does this mean they will get their happy ending after all?

Ned and Yashvi – reunited?
(Digital Spy)

But most importantly, Ned is heading to Sydney to spend time with his mother, Beth Brennan (Natalie Imbruglia) – no relation to Mark etc.  Natalie recently won The Masked Singer UK and added her voice very loudly to the #SaveNeighbours Campaign so could it be possible that she might also return?!  This would be amazing!  Especially with Lauren, the third Mrs Willis back on screen, albeit played by a different actress, but still the same character who had an affair with Brad when Beth was in a relationship with him way back in the 90s.  Neighbours, you need to make this happen.  Three Mrs Willis’s on screen at the same time: Beth, Terese and Lauren!  Ramsay Street actually could explode after all!

Will Beth make one last return to Ramsay Street…?
(ITV)

Also returning as part of the Willis clan are Kyle and Roxy Canning (Chris Milligan and Zima Anderson).  They too have only left the show very recently.  With Kyle only just recovering from testicular cancer, these two are a couple of the level of Scott and Charlene in terms of just how much they love each other.  I’m not a TV wedding crier by any stretch of the imagination but I got very emotional at this one.  And now, despite the odds, they are expecting a baby!

Chris Milligan and Zima Anderson as Kyle and Roxy Canning

Other Notable Characters

Also back for the finale are: Shane Ramsay (Peter O’Brien), Des Clarke (Paul Keane), Joel Samuels (Daniel MacPherson), Izzy Hoyland (Natalie Bassingwaighte) and Amy Williams (Zoe Cramond).

The Robinson Family

Melissa Bell has returned as Lucy Robinson
(Digital Spy)

The final family with returning character are the Robinson family.  Paul can expect two of his many children to return: Elle and Andrew (Pippa Black and Jordan Patrick).  Lucy Robinson (Melissa Bell) is already on screen, attempting to rescue the mess Paul has made – and is blaming Terese for – of the fashion show.  She is due to be joined by gay best friend and father of her baby, former resident, Chris Pappas (James Mason) who moved to live with her in New York.  As far as Paul and Terese are concerned, they remain together in the credits, so I hold out hope that by 1st August, they will be back together, where they belong.

Scott and Charlene (Jason Donovan and Kylie Minogue)

Jason Donovan and Kylie Minogue as Scott and Charlene Robinson
(Metro)

And of course, the return that everyone is talking about… Scott and Charlene Robinson, played by the legendary Jason Donovan and Kylie Minogue, who began their careers in Neighbours in the 80s and went onto become global superstars.  This has been the ultimate dream cast return for decades and I can hardly believe it is actually happening!  Scott and Charlene have been mentioned regularly throughout the years with their extended family still living on Ramsay Street.  In fact, Jason’s real life daughter plays Harlow!  In the fictional world, Scott and Charlene have been happily married all this time and remain one of those couples and make you believe in true love!  Their wedding was watched in the UK by 20 million people!

They went onto have two children (off screen), Madeline and Daniel, both of whom turned up on Ramsay Street as adults.  Daniel arrived in 2014 and eventually married Imogen Willis, daughter of Terese, who eventually married Paul, brother of Scott!  I am secretly hoping that Daniel and Imogen (Tim Phillips and Ariel Kaplan) might also find their way back home for the end!

Of course, everyone knows that since departing Erinsborough, Kylie went onto have an incredible pop career and became a huge gay icon and ally.  She has lent her voice to the cause and is cherished by the LGBTQ community the world over.  So, there is something particularly special, I think, that she is returning not just to the show that began her career but to the show that has developed itself from a soap that competed with all the others, to a soap that celebrates diversity in such a magical way – far beyond any others.  And I watch them all!  When Kylie and Jason were Australia and the UK’s sweethearts, there were no gay characters. Through the years, they tried and failed with characters such as Skye and Lana and had successes with others such as Chris.  Now, we have Aaron and David, who even have a child and have been accepted as foster parents.  We have Nicolette.  We have Chloe.  We have had the privilege of following Mackenzie through her journey as a beautiful, graceful transgender teenager.  I believe we’re about to meet a non-binary character in the coming weeks.  Aaron and David had the first gay wedding on Neighbours and walked down the aisle to ‘Especially for You’ by Kylie and Jason themselves!  So, to have them back is an amazing thing, despite the circumstances.

Although, I am dreading that final episode and having to say goodbye to one of my most favourite ever programmes, I admire the dignity with which all the cast and crew have approached things.  I also salute every single fan, who with true Ramsay Street Spirit, has campaigned for the show to be saved.  I am proud to have been tweeting away, desperate to save the show we love and I have really enjoyed making those connections.  I am excited for all the cast members who love the show so much that they wanted to be part of its celebrations and goodbyes.  And I will also never lose the hope that even though the show will be rested, it will return.

Rainbows and Affirmations

The incredible Leah Bracknell as Zoe Tate

I remember watching the soaps when I was a closeted teenager, in awe of the likes of Zoe Tate, who was such a rare gem on 90’s TV.  Not only had she been out and proud since the early nineties, but her sexuality was also only part of her story.  She was a powerful, even formidable character.  She had money and knew how to use it.  She had her own career as a vet, that she loved.  She had a wicked streak.  In later years, actress Leah Bracknell portrayed the most heartbreaking scenes as Zoe battled Schizophrenia.  When people think back to the nineties in terms of the presence of LGBTQ characters, their minds immediately flashback to Beth Jordache and ‘that kiss’, which is of course important but Zoe came out a year before this and was the first lesbian character in a British Soap.  She was also the first gay character to have a wedding/blessing, many years before Civil Partnerships or equal marriage were even dots on the horizon for any of us.  I was genuinely saddened in 2019 when Leah passed away from cancer.

‘That Kiss’ in Brookside

Flash forward to present day and this past June when many of us have been marking Pride month with such gratitude that we are here, that so many things have changed and that we have the capacity and strength to try and change the things that still need changing.  I have seen so many things online that remind us of why we still need Pride so much.  One of things that struck me hardest was a post about while we live in a world where kids are still sat at home believing they would be better off no longer in this world than being gay, then we still need Pride.  Pride isn’t a party.  Pride is a march of survival.  It’s a moment in time where we embrace every single ounce of ‘different’ inside and let it sing.  Even if we sing out of tune.

I’ve been that kid, sat at home, scared for my future because I didn’t fit in, because while all my friends were watching the boys on TV, I was watching the girls.  And it has been a long road in terms of being and out and proud soap addict to watch these shows change their characters, their storylines and their attitudes towards their characters and their storylines over the past twenty five years or so, when I first started tuning in and I started consciously battling my sexuality.

Lindsey fell for best friend, Shelley in Brookside

I remember, back in the day, that occasionally, a soap would have two dimensional gay man in it to back up another character and have no plot of their own.  They certainly wouldn’t have a love life.  Then there came the phase of the scandal storylines to boost ratings, where quite frankly, the characters and the LGBTQ viewers were badly mistreated.  There was the random storyline of Lindsey Corkhill falling in love with her best friend, Shelley who actually had a thing for her mother in Brookie.  Then there was that time that Todd kissed Nick in Corrie purely to pull viewers in to witness a ‘shock, gay kiss’ between two attractive men.  And more recently, Tracy Barlow slept with Paula for literally no reason.

Charlie and Joey had a short lived romance in Home and Away #CJ
But Willow and Alex got a happy ending! #Willex

Over in Australia, back in 2009, Home and Away’s Charlie Buckton had a dalliance with Joey Collins, which I confess I got completely sucked into.  It ended when Charlie cheated on her with some bloke and Joey left, never to be seen or heard of again.  Charlie (the police officer) slept with one criminal bloke after another before she got shot and died.  Delightful.  They did redeem themselves recently though with Willow and Alex’s relationship, which I also fell in love with – they actually got a happy ending.  Off screen, of course.  Well, you can’t have everything.

The landscape of how soaps have presented the LGBTQ characters and relationships have definitely changed in a positive way over the years, I think.  So many of the partnerships people have grown to love and adore, have not been heterosexual ones.  Once upon a time, a soap would have to handle every aspect of gay relationships with ‘sensitivity’, in case they offended the homophobes when really, people like me and fellow members of the LGBTQ community were just desperate to see ourselves and our lives (or the lives we wanted to live), validated on TV.

Tony and Simon in Eastenders
Lana and Sky finally got their happy ending in Neighbours

I remember back in the day when in Eastenders, Tony left Tiffany for her brother, Simon.  It was a scandal, not because of the affair but because of the sexuality aspect.  I remember Shannon and Mandy falling in love so subtly that you could have missed it.  Neighbours attempted to have Lana and Sky get together but the homophobia was so strong, they abandoned the story.  They were so proud that for their 35th anniversary to be able to rectify this and have the girls get married.  It had always felt for the show and for the actors like an unfinished storyline.

Christian and Syed lived happily ever after in Eastenders (in Birmingham, actually)
Ben and Callum are one of Eastenders’ most popular couples today #Ballum

I also remember the huge story that Eastenders took on when they got Christian and Syed together.  It was amazing!  Not only were they addressing Syed coming to terms with his sexuality, he also had to work out how this fitted with his religion.  And despite the complaints, they became such a loved and popular couple.  Since then, one of the show’s most popular couples are ‘#Ballum’ – Ben and Callum – who got together in a very similar way to Christian and Syed (an affair in the lead up to a wedding).  And one of the most special moments in the show’s history was the moment that Johnny came out to his Dad, Mick and received nothing but pure love and acceptance in return – no hesitation.

Robert and Aaron were made for each other in Emmerdale #Robron

Throughout the soaps, there have been some amazingly popular couples and characters, which show the strength of writing, performance and on-screen chemistry.  Who can forget Robert and Aaron – #Robron – in Emmerdale?  Not my favourite, granted, but massively popular and there were a lot of devastated fans out there when Robert was sent to jail.  Their counterpart, if you like, are Vanessa and Charity (who I much prefer).  I am very hopeful that when Michelle Hardwick (Vanessa) returns from maternity leave, a reconciliation will be on the cards!  Charity herself was initially one of those ‘ratings bisexuals’ when she had a random affair with Zoe Tate in the early noughties.  So it was brilliant when they revisited this and created what has become a fantastic relationship with Vanessa.  Until it all went badly wrong.  Oh and let’s not forget that once upon a time, Charity’s daughter, Debbie, had a fling with best friend, Jasmine, played by Jenna Coleman.  Jasmine went to prison.  I don’t think she’ll be coming back…

I still believe in Charity and Vanessa! (Emmerdale) #Vanity
John Paul and Ste belong together (Hollyoaks)

One of my favourite Hollyoaks pairings is John Paul and Ste.  Between them, they’ve had more relationships than hot dinners and many would say that John Paul’s true love is Craig and Ste’s true love is Brendan.  But personally, I never subscribed to either of those relationships.  Neither of those men ever treated John Paul or Ste very nicely.  Brendan was violent and Craig dangled John Paul on a shoestring for most of their relationship.  But although I have adored people like Doug and Keiron (RIP) and James and Harry (RIP) have been great players thrown into the mix, I firmly believe that Ste and John Paul belong together.

Aaron and David are the perfect couple in Neighbours
Chloe in Neighbours

Over in Australia, Neighbours has excelled itself in waving the rainbow flag.  For me, they have outshone every soap.  Years ago, it dipped its toe in the water with the character of Chris and from there, more and more gay characters arrived.  Now, it can celebrate one of the best partnerships the show and in fact, soap, has ever seen in David and Aaron who are not only legally married (and walked down the aisle to Kylie and Jason!) but have also been foster parents and are expecting their first child.  Aaron’s sister, Chloe is also bisexual and not just telly bisexual where she’s actually straight and goes off with a girl now and again to boost ratings.  Chloe is such a vibrant character and has brought so much diversity to show in terms so showing someone who can love and have relationships with people for who they are, not for what gender they are.

Emma and Jasmine in Doctors

In more recent years, Doctors have created some great character development with Emma who now identifies as pansexual after being very surprised to find herself falling for a female friend. Since then, she has had relationships with either gender and a couple of years ago, the show had an extremely harrowing storyline where Emma and her then girlfriend, Jasmine experienced a homophobic attack. It was not dissimilar to that awful story of the girls on the bus in London a few years ago.

The amazing Mackenzie from Neighbours

Neighbours has taken Pride further in recent years with the amazing trans activist, Georgie Stone, who plays Mackenzie.  Following Mackenzie’s story has been so emotional and so enlightening.  She has been the Hayley Cropper of the millennial generation.  But joking aside, it has been incredible to watch this young person, both the actress and the character, essentially explain her journey.  She has not only portrayed the character but also been involved in the writing and story lining and I have genuinely wept during parts of her tale, as she had undergone surgery and struggled with acceptance from her family.

Hayley Cropper, Coronation Street. The Original.

I remember years and years ago, attending a transgender workshop and the first thing the trainer said was that they would love to say their charity was responsible for the education regarding trans people but it was actually Coronation Street.  Everyone laughed because it was funny and also because it was a little bit true.  This is the far reach of soaps and also the heavy responsibility they have to make sure that as well as entertaining people, they are socially responsible.  I remember when Hayley first turned up in Corrie and it was such a scandal.  I was about thirteen years old and still trying to get my head around my sexuality.  I had no idea about gender diversity or anything and I had never heard of being transgender before.  But the idea of someone not quite fitting, not feeling like they were who or how they were meant to be, completely connected with me.  And Hayley turned out to be this angel, the kindest woman to ever walk the cobbles and they put her together with Roy, the kindest man to ever walk the cobbles…  Well, the magic was made.

Sally from Hollyoaks

Since then, of course, Sally has turned up in Hollyoaks and the actress who plays her helped Coronation Street create Hayley so even though Hayley is gone, it’s kind of like she lives on.  So even though Corrie was extremely late in bringing in the L, the G and the B, they did lead the charge with the T, something other soaps haven’t always been that eager (or that good) at doing.  Currently, it’s only Emmerdale, (alongside Neighbours)who have Matty with any trans visibility.  His story is particularly special as we actually knew his character as Holly, years ago.  This hasn’t been done before.  What’s also been a turning point in recent years with LGBTQ characters is that most of the actors who are playing the roles are members of the LGBTQ community.

So, at the end of this June – Pride Month – I am happy to reflect on how hard our soaps have worked to become inclusive and reflect the society we do or should live in.  I am happy that I have all manner of characters and pairings to discuss, enjoy and dislike amongst all the different soaps.  I love that I don’t have to cling to the single character that exists in each soap just because they’re gay.  Firstly, there are plenty to choose from (except in Home and Away) and secondly, they are written so well that actually, sometimes they’re just not very nice.  Because not all gay people are nice!  Not all gay men are camp and fluffy.  And gay women come in all variations too!  Imagine!

Swooning (over) Shannon in Home and Away

When I was growing up, that just wasn’t how it was.  You only knew Shannon liked Mandy because she talked about her incessantly.  A bit like I talked about Shannon, actually!  You were lucky if Zoe could hold hands with her wife.  And two guys together were a rare scandal.  Now, homophobia on screen is rare and definitely dealt with.  I am reminded of a scene in Eastenders where Callum’s Dad was vile to him and Ben and Phil Mitchell to stood up for them.  It was such a fantastic and affirming scene.

All the while people are not safe in the world because of their gender or sexuality, there is a lot of work to do.  All the while there are people who don’t feel they belong in this world because of their gender or sexuality, there is a lot of work to do.  But just for a brief moment in time, it is nice to reflect on how far this small corner of our society has come, even in my lifetime.  When I was a teenager, I absorbed every message that these shows delivered to me and I am overwhelmed at how the messages have changed.  You couldn’t pay me any money in the world to be a kid today with social media and mobile phones constantly beeping at me and recording my ever move and mistake.  But I do think the positive approach to diversity and acceptance is a special thing that I definitely didn’t have twenty (ish) years ago.  Soaps are intended to reflect life.  They beam their way into our homes on a daily basis and right now, I praise them for doing a good job of positively affirming us, the LGBTQ community.

A Happy Ending…?

Well, I heard on the grapevine that Willow Harris is set to leave Summer Bay (we’re behind here in the UK).  Firstly, I am devastated as she is one of my favourite characters.  She is very cool, very funny and very entertaining.  Over the years, she has brought no end of drama to the show, including the latest twist to the Colby Thorne murder trial when she was revealed to be the shock Witness X, betraying one friend to keep another out of prison.

Willow was happy with Alex…

Since her romance last year with the lovely Doctor Alex Neilson, Willow has been somewhat listless and I must admit that I thought the show missed a trick when Willow departed for several weeks after the trial and they didn’t have her go and visit Alex while she was away.  However, I am very excited to hear that she and Alex are essentially going to get their happy ending!  It may be off-screen and it may not involve actress, Zoe Ventoura actually returning to Home and Away but I gather Willow will make a phone call to Alex and then drive off to Queensland to start a new life with her.

Charlie and Joey fell in love in 2009

Home and Away is not famous for being pro-gay.  In fact, I would say it’s pretty famous for the opposite.  In 2009, they attempted a lesbian storyline with Charlie Buckton and Joey Collins and it was hit with so much homophobia both off-screen and as part of the storyline that after Charlie had a one night stand with a man, Joey left town, never to be mentioned again.  Charlie then jumped on the next male murderer she could find.  She, a police officer, then took up with a male gang leader until she herself was murdered.  But it was all perfectly acceptable because it was all heterosexual.  Better to date criminals than women.  What a lovely message.

Joey was never seen again and Charlie went back to men. Then died.

It was a real shame because the actress who played Charlie (Esther Anderson) was so positive about the LGBTQ storyline and gay fans of the show, myself included, really got behind it.  When the character of Joey left, it was with a ‘let’s take a break’ idea when actually, they had already decided it was done and dusted.  The whole thing was done to cause controversy and get some ratings up.  It worked but it was a shame to have treated the story in such a way as it did come to mean a lot to people.  But it just got shut down, never to be tried again until #Willex.

Perhaps it’s because I’m British and I just lump the two Aussie soaps together (they might have completely different audiences in Australia), but what I find really odd is that in contrast, Neighbours is completely rainbow coloured.  We’ve had the wedding between Aaron and David (walking down the aisle to Kylie and Jason, if you please).  There’s bisexual Chloe who has had various relationships.  Sky and Lana came back to Erinsborough to get married, after their relationship suffered the Charlie and Joey fate all those years ago.  And we have the most incredible, beautiful transgender girl in the character of Mackenzie, played by activist, Georgie Stone.  Watching her story has been amazing.

Neighbours does Pride!

As for #Willex, their story was lovely to watch and knowing how positive and enthusiastic both actresses, Zoe Ventoura and Sarah Roberts were from the start was also really brilliant.  Also, after Alex left, Willow has been completely single, not consoling herself with any other romances, male or female, which was a welcome surprise.  Alex has turned out to be the love of her life.  So now she is leaving, it is such a wonderful thing to see that she will depart by moving to Queensland to be in a committed relationship with Alex.  Our girls get a happy ending.  I for one am really am happy and I can’t wait to get to these scenes in the UK, despite it meaning having to say goodbye to Willow.

Could Willow and Alex get their happy ending…?

Neighbours: So, Where Were We…?

(Monday 15th June – Tuesday 4th August 2020)

Many apologies for my vanishing act.  Personal circumstances!  But here is a rough guide to the past few weeks on Neighbours (I’ll spend the next however long doing the other soaps too but please bear with me!)

Andrea abducts Hugo…

So, we had utter chaos with Andrea plotting to escape prison and run off with Hugo, which, with the help of a hapless prison guard, she briefly succeeded in doing.  However, Heather genuinely proved to have changed by raising the alarm and putting her own daughter back behind bars where she belonged.  Now, what she did to Sonya was utterly unforgiveable but I have to admit that I have warmed enormously to Heather over these past few weeks.  She is so engaging and of all the bonkers plots Neighbours has thrown at us, this whole Dee/Andrea/Heather story has been absolutely epic.  I’ve loved it from start to finish.  Madeline West has been amazing at playing the two roles so very differently.  And I adore Kerry Armstrong, who plays Heather.  Sadly for Toadie though, having put his heart on the line again after the tragic loss of Sonya, his relationship with Dee was not to be as she headed to Alaska to get to know her father.  Sad times.

Heather helps Toadie and Dee track Andrea down…

Another fabulous week in Erinsborough was Pride Week with possibly the best cameo ever from Courtney Act.  Amazing!  I loved every second of it.  No soap flies the rainbow flag better than Neighbours (although Hollyoaks makes a gallant effort).  That week was a particularly special week for Mackenzie as she reconnected with her Dad and then went through with her gender reassignment surgery.  We witnessed some seriously powerful scenes, including the reading of Mackenzie’s diaries as she dealt with the departure of her father from the family home, his rejection of her and how she dealt with transitioning so young.  I hold my hands up.  I cried.  Georgie Stone is an absolute star.

Courtney Act!

Yashvi completed her police training and started work at the local station, partnered with new cop, Levi Canning (grandson of Sheila).  And who was her first arrest?  Harlow!  Yes, really!  The poor girl arranged a party for Hendrix for their 18th birthdays only to find people taking drugs at the party.  She tried to get rid of them, not wanting anyone to get into trouble, only for the police to turn up and arrest her.  Oops.  Then Terese accidentally bribed a policeman to get the charges dropped.  Double oops.

Harlow is arrested…

It was a lovely day when Aaron and David were approved to be foster parents but they were a little alarmed when they were given an older child than they asked for – a teenage boy called Emmett.  It’s been really interesting to watch and I like that they’ve had lots of ups and downs with him, rather than it being all smooth sailing and everything being perfect.  But they are really good parents and he is a vulnerable but sweet kid.  However, he is struggling at school and acting out and they’ve had to ban him from seeing Louis, the only ‘friend’ he has made.  First, Louis got him into trouble by trashing a classroom (resulting in Shaun getting fired from his trial working at the school) and then they borrowed Hendrix’s drone and put Sheila in hospital!  When Emmett returned to school after the holidays and a lot of tutoring, he barely lasted five minutes before running off and meeting up with his brother, Brent, prompting him to get suspended.  Against their better judgement, David and Aaron brough Brent back to the house.  There, they had to explain the reality of the boys’ plan to live together when Brent turns eighteen.

David and Aaron welcome their first foster child…

As for Shaun, his new life (no pun intended) in Erinsborough didn’t quite go to plan, what with having lost his job and everything and Elly was feeling more and more out of place, not helped by Karl’s former BFF, Olivia having published a tell-all book all about Finn.  When Shaun invited Elly to move to Switzerland with him to start a whole new life, she jumped at the chance, breaking poor Bea’s heart.  It was an emotional day as the sisters said their goodbyes and Karl and Susan made a detour on their trip to return briefly and bid Elly farewell too.  I’ll be honest, it was time for her to go.  There just wasn’t anything left for her to do.

Elly and Shaun set off for a new life…

Sheila hasn’t been in the best spirits.  Of course, she is still grieving for Gary but now she is furious that Kyle and Roxy are officially and item.  I can’t see what her problem is, to be honest.  Roxy is awesome and she has been such a support to Kyle in the wake of his Dad’s death.  Sheila’s mood darkened further when Levi turned up and moved into the house.  Her behaviour has been odd to say the least, being how family oriented she is.  She smothers Kyle beyond belief and yet she wants nothing to do with Levi.  Clive finally called her on it and we learned that she hurt him in some way or perhaps there was an accident that she feels responsible for.

Sheila is harbouring secret pain over Levi…

Meanwhile, Levi began to bond with Bea (there’s definitely going to be a romance there at some point).  She witnessed him having an epileptic fit, which he begged her to keep secret, explaining that he had an accident when he was a kid, which caused a head injury and epilepsy.  He was sick of being smothered so he convinced everyone he was healed and has never told work.  He then offered her his support in the wake of Elly, Shaun and Aster’s departure, especially after she punched a guy who was out of order to her, causing her to lose her job at the hotel.

In yet another attempt to save their floundering marriage, Chloe and Pierce tried and failed to be approved as foster carers.  Then Chloe discovered that she was pregnant, having previously been terrified that she was experiencing the beginning of Huntington’s symptoms.  It’s lovely to see Terese step in with complete and utter support here.  And I am very interested to see what will happen next.

Meanwhile, on their holiday, Karl bumped into tearful Jane, her marriage to Des having already fallen apart.  Wanting to follow up on the weddings, Paul struggled to get hold of Jane, although all the other weddings seem to have been successful.  Assuming that Karl has blabbed about the split, Jane phoned shocked Terese, ranting about being left alone.  Terese offered to be the buffer between Jane and Paul.  She also contacted Jane’s daughter, Nicolette, asking for help with Jane.  And that’s why she is one of the best characters ever.

Neighbours: Freedom!

(Tuesday 2nd – Tuesday 9th June 2020)

Shane attempted to contact Grant for Mackenzie, only to discover that he has been injured at work and is in a lot of trouble both with his health and financially.  He confided in Dipi but kept things secret from Mackenzie and against Dipi’s wishes, sent money to Grant to help him out.  In one sweet moment, Dipi had a photo from Mackenzie’s party framed and put in pride of place, confirming her as a member of their family.  I adore Mackenzie and I am so happy she is a fully fledged member of the cast with such great relationships with so many characters, including the Rebecchi family, Harlow and Roxy.  Now she has turned eighteen, I think we’re about to go on a hugely educational journey as she embarks on having her operation and all the different challenges that will involve.  I love Neighbours for doing this story and I love Georgie Stone (who plays her) for prompting them to create this character.

Harlow became despondent after the party, feeling like she and Hendrix are too different in their interests and are therefore doomed.  She then decided to rebel and behave badly but Hendrix didn’t like the idea at all, pointing out that he didn’t want to date himself, he wanted to be with her.  Could these two get any cuter?  However, we’ll soon see if he is up to the task of creating a memorable (in a good way) eighteenth birthday for her like Ritchie did for Mackenzie…  No pressure!

Toadie and Dee finally decided it was time to be intimate.  After a lot of faffing about, not to mention some tears at the enormity of being together after so many years apart, they finally did it.  I mean, I am starting to accept this.  Dee is nice and I want Toadie to be happy.  He deserves it.  But I just…  I miss Sonya, okay?

Chloe and Aaron overheard Claudia talking in the hotel lobby with a guy who turned out to be a dodgy policeman (thanks to a call to Mark) about getting rid of evidence, which they immediately concluded must mean that Claudia was behind the fire during Finn’s trial.  Now, I’m sorry.  I love Neighbours.  It is one of my most favourite soaps.  But I take so much issue with this.  Why on earth would Claudia be chatting away to a dodgy contact in a busy hotel lobby?  And more than this, why on earth would she be chatting about the fire now?  That whole thing was done and dusted a million moons ago.  So many things have happened since then, not least that Finn has regained his memory, gone bonkers and murdered two people and accidentally drowned in a grave intended for Susan.  Why be chatting about the fire now?  Why would it happen?  Apart from a lazy way to move the story on.  And an unnecessary way.  There were so many ways for the truth to be unearthed.

Anyway, Aaron opted to confront Claudia who rather outlandishly attempted to buy his silence by offering to ‘get’ him and David a baby!  Despite their utter shock, they kept Claudia talking while Chloe, Bea and Susan took the opportunity to search her hotel room for any possible evidence that she is rancid with guilt.  When she did return, she bumped into the women stepping out of the lift, all of whom were terrible at giving a reason as to why they were there.  I mean, you’d come up with a reason ahead of time, just in case, wouldn’t you?  She became even more suspicious when she saw a couple of things out of place, phoning Sam in panic as she had just had a phone call from the police – Mark had reported the dodgy cop Chloe and Aaron saw her with earlier.

Meanwhile, Toadie was heartbroken to have to tell Elly that her appeal had failed.  However, he refused to let things lie and investigated the judge who sentenced Elly.  He has overruled the prosecution recommendations a handful of times and each time, Sam was the lawyer involved.  After a bit more digging, he discovered that the judge was indeed being blackmailed due to gambling debts.  Sam and Claudia are now under investigation.  Hooray!

However, this didn’t immediately help Elly, who was still trapped behind bars with Andrea who was making her life hell.  Frightened for her life, Elly hid a weapon under her mattress, which she ended up pulling out when Andrea forced her into a ‘paid’ fight with Patrice.

Susan, Bea and Chloe charged over to the hotel to confront Claudia but she had vanished – with Aster!  Immediately contacting the police, Susan and Bea attempted to track down Claudia to her private plane, fearful that she intended to illegally leave the country with the baby, which of course was exactly what she planned.  At the airport, Claudia was all set to depart when, in the least shocking plot twist to ever happen in the history of soap, who should turn up but… Shaun!  Who would ever have imagined that he wasn’t dead after all?  Apart from… everybody.  It would have been more of a shock if he had actually turned out to have died.  Basically, they ‘killed him off’ so that Elly and Finn could have their ‘Buffy and Angel’ moment in order to turn Finn evil and create this whole story.  Don’t get me wrong, I loved the whole Finn plot.  I am not complaining.  But Shaun being alive was the worst ‘shock’ comeback ever.  Also, he is meant to have been to hell and back and yet he was able to get out of the hospital and fly to Australia from Switzerland all within two days?  Really?!  And he’s not even jet-lagged?  And there’s no physical sign of injury?  Come off it.

However, it was a very sweet moment when he was able to meet his daughter for the very first time.  And he forced his mother to confess all and turn herself into the police.  Susan and Bea (not to mention everyone else) got the shock of their lives to see him – unlike the viewers.  With Claudia having had no choice but to confess, Sam abandoned her like a rat on a sinking ship.  Shaun couldn’t forgive his mother for her actions.

While Toadie succeeded in getting Elly’s sentence reduced back to a suspended sentence, it really was just in time as she was in the middle of having to fight Patrice.  Andrea was utterly livid.  Before heading home to see her daughter, Elly confronted Claudia but her anger dissolved into unwanted pity.  While Claudia continued to accuse Elly of murdering Finn and being an unfit mother to Aster, Elly got the last word – if anyone is unfit, it’s Claudia, look what she turned her son into.  That’s what I’ve been saying all along!

As Elly returned home, she was delighted to see Aster and overwhelmed to see Shaun, although things were not as easy between them as we would have hoped.  Everyone in the Kennedy house has been through so much and everyone is processing what happened with Finn in different ways.  While Shaun offered to leave, Elly asked him to stay.  His family put her family through hell but it wasn’t his fault and he deserves to be a father to Aster.  Now, with Jodi Anasta about to depart the show, perhaps it would be nice for Elly, Shaun and Aster to have a fresh start together?

A family reunion…

One thing that isn’t going well right now, is Karl and Susan.  Through this whole thing, the gulf between them is getting wider and wider.  They worked on the Elly and Claudia situation separately and although Karl tried to communicate with Susan, she did not want to communicate with him.  And even at the end, she clearly wanted nothing to do with him.  It’s very, very sad.  And it’s also very worrying that his first port of call is to call this Olivia woman and talk to her instead.  Karl and Susan are the best!  I can’t go through them breaking up!  I just can’t!

Dee was deeply concerned when Aaron mentioned that Claudia had paid money into Andrea’s account in prison, prompting her to confront her twin.  Andrea admitted everything, sending her into an angry rant about how easy Dee’s life has been (so easy, driving off a cliff and being ‘dead’ for however many years) and how hard it was for her to be dragged up by a crazy woman and have to fight for everything she has.  Subsequently, she was pulled away by a guard.

Across the Street, Naomi struggled to keep her feelings for Pierce under control almost as much as Pierce struggled to keep his clothes on at inappropriate moments.  Eventually, when Naomi made it clear that she didn’t want to work closely with him, ‘oblivious’ Pierce challenged her, wanting to know what he had done wrong, forcing her to confess her true feelings for him.  I think this situation is going to go from amusing to murky fairly soon…

Things get intense between Naomi and Pierce…

Speaking of feelings, Kyle finally got his act together and ended things with Jess in order to try and make things work with Roxy.  Unfortunately, it’s too little, too late and Roxy had had enough of being heartbroken and gone to stay in Darwin to try and heal her heart.  Kyle, you are a bit rubbish sometimes.  That girl has done nothing but try to be there for you and you’ve treated her so badly.  Let’s just hope she still likes you when she gets home!

Neighbours: Whatever it Takes

(Wednesday 25th – Friday 27th March 2020)

Wednesday welcomes the new credits for Neighbours and I have to say, I absolutely love Bonnie Anderson’s vocals.  She sounds beautiful and it’s real throwback to old school, traditional Neighbours.  I love it.  My only disappointment was that I had been hoping for a genuine shake-up to the credits and completely new clips but there were actually no real changes.  Gary had already been mercilessly removed at the beginning of the week and now Finn is also gone.  But the loveliest thing is all is that Georgie Stone joins the regular cast as Mackenzie Hargreaves alongside the Rebecchi clan.  I am so happy!

So, to the show itself…  Elly denies murdering Finn, explaining that she attempted to bury him because she needed to know that he wouldn’t come back and harm anyone again.  I mean, it’s dodgy storytelling but we’ll go with it.  Call it guilt, shock, grief or whatever.  Mark visits her at home after she is released and warns her that Finn died from blunt force trauma which left him paralysed (ironic after his fakery as Patrick) and led to him drowning.  However, Elly’s fingerprints were found of the tap, which she didn’t mention touching.  He advises her to lawyer up and be careful about everything she says.

While Mark and Paige feel guilty about their own personal happiness, Sky and Lana are reluctant to be separated.  However, Lana has a book tour to complete and Sky needs to stick around for Finn’s murder investigation.  I particularly enjoyed the moment that Mark dismissed her interrupting ‘police business’ and then she introduced herself as Senior Detective Mangel.  Ha!  Sorry, I know Mark is a really popular character but I find him ever so arrogant.  Sky visits Toadie as a civilian, wanting to know how he is but also wanting to know how on earth he escaped The Island when he was so injured.  Because he’s a hero, Sky, because he’s a hero.

Worried that Sky believes Elly is guilty, Mark decides not to return to Adelaide (with Paige’s permission) and after waving his wife off at the airport, informs Sky that he is sticking around to work on the case.  Sky assures him that she will follow the evidence.

Karl tells Elly that Bea feels responsible for Finn’s actions.  He is sure that Sky will be a reasonable voice during the investigation but Mark is convinced she is going to put her through hell.  Forensics don’t prove or disprove Elly’s innocence but Sky is certain that she is holding back after watching Finn’s increasingly intense video diaries, revealing his feelings for her and her feelings for him.  She believes there is more to the story than Elly has told them.  Elly’s DNA has also been found on the rock that killed Finn; Elly explains that she pulled him up to check his pulse when she found him.  She didn’t think their feelings for each other were relevant.  Um… I think that’s a big, fat lie, young lady!

Susan and Elly meet up, both overwhelmed with guilt for letting the situation with Finn spiral; when they knew he had developed feelings for Elly, they should have shut him down then.  Well, yes!  Obviously!  Susan, you did disappoint me.  Anyway, Karl struggles to get Susan to slow down as she throws all of Finn’s belongings out and rips up the family photo from the christening.  Susan is called in for questioning and makes the whole situation worse by admitting that Elly stated she was going to make sure Finn wasn’t going to hurt them again, that she would do whatever it takes.  She hurriedly insists that Elly didn’t kill him.  Well, it’s a bit late for that, Auntie Suse…  Elly is arrested for Finn’s murder and Hendrix breaks the news to Susan that Finn killed Prue.  It all gets a bit much for her.

Sheila is broken over the loss of her son…

Grief hangs over the Canning House as Sheila and Kyle struggle to come to terms with Gary’s death.  Xanthe refuses to come home (presumably the actress declined to reprise her role!)  Terese visits to console the family.  Roxy does her best to cheer Kyle up.  She is so clumsy, it’s cute.  Toadie’s first port of call upon his release from hospital is to visit Sheila and Kyle.  Sheila asks him to speak at the funeral but she is soon hit with the realisation that they haven’t even found Gary’s body yet, although they soon get word that his body has been recovered and needs to be autopsied.  Mark tells her about Prue’s death.

Kyle moves back in with Sheila in time for Mark to break the news that Gary was shot in the back with an arrow.  A shirt in the car Finn was driving was found, covered in Gary’s blood.  They can only hope that Gary’s death was quick and painless.  Kyle is torn up with guilt over bringing the archery set to The Island.  Sheila’s anger switches to one person: Susan, the woman who brought Finn back to Ramsay Street.  Oh dear.

Meanwhile, at the hospital, Paul and Terese opt to delay telling Harlow about the death of her mother.  Paul continues to refuse to let Hendrix near his granddaughter.  Ned advises Hendrix to give Harlow and her family space and lets slip about Prue’s death.  Ignoring him, Hendrix sneaks in to see hospital to see Harlow and he is so lovely to her.  I was on the edge of my seat, assuming that he would let slip about Prue but he doesn’t.  Paul takes him out of the room, asking him if he has told her but the young man simply says that it’s not his place.  It thaws things between them at last.  Paul seems to understand that Hendrix really does care about Harlow and wants the best for her.

While poor Harlow tries to piece together all her confusing memories of The Island, her loved ones avoid all her questions.  Alone, she listens to a voicemail from her mother, at the end of which there is an explosion.  Harlow demands answers from Paul, who has no choice but to explain that Prue has died.  Heartbroken, Harlow listens to her mother’s final words on repeat.  She feels terrible for being on bad terms with Prue when she died.

Between Sky, Mark, Paul and Terese, they work out that the bomb that killed Prue must have been contained in the Honeymoon Box she had with her – and that it was originally intended for Lucy.  Paul explains to Harlow what really happened.

There is a particularly sweet scene where Chloe offers her support to Hendrix, who accepts her as a ‘sort of’ parent.  He also accepts, in light of Harlow’s situation, just how lucky he really is.

David is torn up with guilt over not noticing that Finn’s memory had returned and for also letting him visit Harry; if he had done things differently, would he have been able to stop things from turning out the way they have?  Ned accuses Finn of having faked his memory loss from the start.

Due to the Coronavirus, Neighbours did temporarily suspend filming

It doesn’t look like there will be a break in schedule in Australia but in the UK, Channel 5 will now only air episodes on Mondays and Fridays, 1:45pm and 6pm

Neighbours: Golden!

(Friday 20th March 2020)

Susan is becoming increasingly concerned about Bea, who hasn’t been heard from apart from a text or two to Elly since she left The Island and hasn’t yet reached Liz, who she is supposed to be going to stay with.  She hasn’t been able to get in touch with anyone and is concerned that a huge storm is heading towards The Island.

Mackenzie drags reluctant Ritchie down to the Wedding Expo.  He is not thrilled.  They are awkward when they bump into Terese who wants to know where Harlow is and it’s not long before the truth comes tumbling out; Harlow and Hendrix have gone to The Island.  Paul is too busy trying to resolve the fact that both Des and Jane have asked him to be their best man and left him to decide who to choose.  He has no space in his head to even listen to his wife.

While Jane is sad that she has nothing of her Nan, Mrs Mangel with her on her wedding day, Dipi suggests Nell, her namesake be her flower girl, which is just a beautiful touch.  She is such a cutie.  Rather than being Jane or Des’s best man, Paul has secured acting as their celebrant so he can be there for both of them equally.  And finally, after goodness knows how many years, Des Clarke and Jane Harris are husband and wife!

Paul officiates Jane and Des’s Wedding!

After the wedding, Paul overhears Terese discussing Harlow sneaking off to The Island with Hendrix.  He is not amused, especially with the storm breaking contact so they have no idea whether she is safe or not.  And she’s not.  She’s stuck in a mine with Bea and a dangerous snake!

Meanwhile, Clive and Sheila are uncomfortable all day, encountering signs that they should get married, starting with Sheila winning a wedding dress worth several thousand dollars. Eventually, they are honest with each other. Neither of them wants to get married. Sheila intends to sell the dress and take Clive on a fantastic holiday.

Jack solves Mark and Paige’s prayers when he announces that he has got a job in Adelaide!  The family can all move to Adelaide to be with Mark, Tyler, Piper and Faye and be one big happy family.  Hooray!

Also, just as an aside, the background music of Queen Kylie’s ‘Golden’ just made this episode even more fabulous.  Thank you, Neighbours.  Thank you.

Channel 5, weekdays 1:45pm and 5:30pm

Plus Neighbours Late: Endgame 10pm, Channel 5

Neighbours: Mardi Gras!

(Monday 24th – Friday 28th February 2020)

Jane confides in Susan about the catfish and although Susan is compassionate, she makes it clear that harassing students is not acceptable.  Jane is suitably abashed.  When Jane accuses Elly, nobody believes it.  Eager to help, Paul sets Jane up with Private Investigator to help her find the catfish.  Unfortunately, Jane then walks in on Paul talking to Dipi, exasperated over how Jane could be so foolish as to fall for it in the first place.  Jane gives a heartfelt explanation which comes down to one thing: loneliness.  It’s genuinely sad, especially when she tells him it’s even worse now as she’s broke and embarrassed on top of being lonely.

Thinking they are being burgled, Roxy attacks Paige who has come to visit.  Roxy denies that she has any interest in Mark but is blatantly jealous over the obvious attraction between Paige and Mark.  Paige privately admits that she and Jack are having relationship issues and she thinks he may be having an affair; he barely speaks to her and he is always chatting online to someone.  Roxy calls Paige out on already knowing that Mark was in Erinsborough and having the full intention of getting back together with him, which she denies.  I am Team Roxy on this one.

Terese is a good Aunt and interferes, bringing Jack to Ramsay Street to sort things out with Paige.  He also brings with him none other than Mark Gottlieb!  And he is just as annoying as he was in the nineties!  He has given up the collar and is now a celebrity chef but met Jack on a Christian forum and has been counselling him.  Paige and Jack finally talk.  Jack explains that he needs to go back to the Priesthood.  They have the friendliest and crappiest breakup in the world.  It’s just weak.  Paige and Jack fought so hard to be together during their last stint on the show and they worked so well.  Presumably the story is to bring Paige and Mark together, a couple that never worked.  They made a terrible couple.  So now they’ve broken up a lovely couple just for the sake of this.  I’m sorry, Neighbours but this is utter rubbish.

Jack seeks counsel from Mark…

Mark G, meanwhile bumps into old flame, Lucy.  One of the weddings we’re going to see during the birthday week, perhaps?

Pierce gives Chloe a random island he once bought to do whatever she wants with.  You know, just a causal island.  Who doesn’t have an island?  And if you can afford an island and a hotel, of course you’d be living in a small house on a cul-de-sac, wouldn’t you?  Anyway, the island is of course necessary for Neighbours’ birthday party so I won’t complain too much…

Sheila is furious with Gary for abandoning the house while she was away.  He went to London to find Prue and soon after he returns home, Sheila and Harlow discover that Prue is also on her way to Erinsborough, having left The Order.  Harlow is beside herself with anxiety over seeing her mother and then further upset to realise that she is actually coming to see Gary, not her.  Sheila walks in on a rather naughty Skype call between Gary and Prue!

Hendrix admits to Pierce that he and Harlow nearly kissed.  When Harlow confides in Mackenzie, her friend warns Hendrix not to mess her around.  This finally gives Hendrix the green light to tell Harlow how he really feels.  When Harlow is upset about Prue, he is genuinely sweet to her.  I think this could be a lovely pairing.

Lucy asks Bea to be their hotel wedding singer for the Wedding Expo.  However, she tells her that for the sake of the hotel’s reputation, Finn is not welcome at the event.  Bea turns down the gig on principal.  Finn is furious with Lucy for putting his girlfriend in that position and also for judging him on a past he doesn’t remember when he has changed so much since then.  Finn continues to ignore calls from Trent.

When Karl installs a sensor alarm for Elly that keeps going off, he sends Finn round to fix it.  But the sound completely overwhelms Finn to the point that all his memories are triggered.  Everything that happened, everything he did and everything that was done to him – his relationship with Elly, posing as Patrick and using Bea, Susan pushing him off the cliff – everything comes rushing back.  His whole memory has been restored.  Leaving Kyle to fix the alarm, Finn rushes home, sobbing alone.  His whole life has changed forever.

It’s Mardi Gras and Aaron and David set off to represent Lassiters!  They have an amazing day (filmed the year before in order to show it on the correct day) where they wave and cheer on the float, have to run and hide from one of Aaron’s exes, Aaron makes a fool of himself in front of Jake Shears and they have a fabulous conversation with Courtney Act.  This is probably my favourite Neighbours cameo ever.  She is the just the best!

David and Aaron meet Courtney Act!

Back in Erinsborough, everyone gathers to celebrate Mardi Gras as a community and Lassisters is all dressed up in rainbows!  While Mackenzie is overwhelmed to be in a situation to be in a gathering where she is actually being celebrated rather than tolerated, everyone is partying and looking forward to seeing Aaron and David on TV.  I truly love the inclusivity of Neighbours.  Long may it continue.

Finn attends the party, attempting to pretend that nothing has happened.  He lies to Elly that he was just feeling overwhelmed as they were supposed to stay away from each other.  Things take a turn when Lucy orders him to leave.  He struggles to control his anger, following her out of the party where she phones Chris to talk to their daughter.  The old Finn would have had no qualms in harming her.  But he manages to control himself and leaves the party to go home.  He confides in his video diary and is still desperate to be a good person.  Well, the trailers reveal that that’s not going to work out…!

Finn’s world comes crashing down as his memories return…

Channel 5, 1:45pm and 5:30pm

Coronation Street

As Kel wakes from his coma, he refuses to tell Gemma, Bernie or the police what really happened.  Knowing that Paul was responsible but unaware of their history, Bernie forces the men together.  Kel takes the blame and says he made a homophobic joke and it was all a misunderstanding he’d like to forget, forcing Paul into a position to make friends.  Ready to leave Wetherfield, Summer, Billy and Gemma beg him to stay.

Things come to a head for Asha when Mary witnesses her being bullied at a school plat rehearsal.  Having thought that he daughter was just misbehaving when she used his credit card, Dev actually talks to his daughter.  He opens the package she bought and is distraught to find the skin lightening cream and forces her to show him her horrifically damaged arms.  Asha runs away to Amy’s, who seeks help from Liz who is genuinely helpful and able to get father and daughter talking to each other properly.  Dev takes Asha o the GP to get some proper help.  I have to say, these scenes were genuinely heartbreaking to watch.

Gary continues to try and win Maria over but his dark side continues to show when he sack Fiz for almost getting too close to his dirty dealings.  However, frustrated that she might lose her own job, Jade persuades him to give Fiz another chance.

Nobody apart from Ryan seems to notice that Ali is walking around like a zombie.  But it all comes to a head when he looks after Liam for the afternoon and falls asleep with the oven on, putting himself and Liam in danger from smoke.  Of course, Gary is on hand to save the day and Maria is furious with Ali for letting her and her son down, especially as they have just said the L word.  Ryan finds pills in Ali’s jacket, confronting him about his addiction.  His words prompt Ali to end his relationship with Maria, not wanting to put her and Liam at risk anymore.  Maria wants to work things out but Ali ends things once and for all.  Maria takes her fury out on Michelle, prompting Gary to step in as the hero again as Sarah looks on.

Kevin’s sister, Debbie shows up, eager to give an inheritance she has received to her brother as she doesn’t need it.  Kevin reluctantly accepts on the provision that he can share it with his kids.  During her brief visit, Debbie notes that Sophie is not enjoying her business course, prompting Paula to book her a ticket to go travelling with Kate in order to set her free (and Brooke Vincent to go on maternity leave).

Michelle confides in Robert that her boss was inappropriate with her but then has to stop him battering him.  She then books them a holiday, which seriously messes with his double life with Vicky.  I mean, how thoughtless of you, Michelle!

Beth comes up with the idea of a bucket list for Sinead but it turns out that she doesn’t want to do anything after all.  With plans to go on holiday cancelled, Claudia asks Daniel’s permission to hold an 80th birthday party for Ken, although Ken is hesitant, feeling it’s inappropriate to celebrate when Sinead is dying.  Daniel and Sinead get the awful news that her body is not strong enough for more chemotherapy and all they can do for her now is to keep her comfortable.  She only has a few weeks left.  At home, Sinead wants to go to Ken’s party, which Daniel reveals to Sinead is also an early 1st birthday party for Bertie so Sinead doesn’t miss it.  Both of them are destroyed by the news they have received but Sinead also wants to be part of their family while she has the chance.  The party goes ahead and even Norris pops down from Scotland to see Ken, bringing with him an online call from Emily, who is turning ninety the following week.  Sinead is overwhelmed by the party and tells everyone what the Consultant has told them, somewhat bringing the party to an end.

Doctors

Zara enjoys toying with Daniel (and Becky) after their indiscretion but eventually agrees to keep quiet.  Daniel’s guilt, meanwhile prompts him to pledge his commitment to Becky and ask her to move in with him.  While Becky excitedly packs her things, she admits some anxiety about Daniel’s commitment to her when speaking to Ayesha.  Daniel meanwhile, is challenged by an old friend about whether his feelings for Zara could ever truly die.  The move leads to questions from Becky to Daniel – has he ever been faithful to any of his partners?  No, he hasn’t.  He swears that he has changed but of course, he only cheated on Becky herself with Zara a week ago but neglects to mention that!

With Daniel apparently having moved on, Emma persuades Zara to join a dating agency.  When Zara receives a ‘dick pic’ from the guy she is talking to, she ends up diagnosing him with HPV!

Karen, Rob and Sid are excited that Immie is moving back to Letherbridge for work.  Immie persuades Becky to let her begin an art project at The Mill, which she eagerly includes Valerie in, in order to help her grief for Geoffrey.  Imogen excitedly prepares for her gallery opening but her mother frustrates her by breaking one of her cameras and has to replace it.  However, that pales into insignificance when Sid finds a lump in Immie’s breast.

Sid performs a vasectomy on a guy who is desperate not to have any children after discovering that his father has Huntington’s, aware that he too could have the gene.  Al and Valerie become embroiled in two older patients who have been stealing.  Jimmi has the upsetting task of testing the rules of confidentiality when his counselling patient reveals a murder to him.   Emma supports a young woman who has become the face of a transplant charity who has become the victim of Munchausen’s by Proxy, as her friend cannot seem to cope with her friend’s amazing recovery and keeps insisting that she has become ill again and won’t survive.  Valerie finds herself in receipt of some unwanted attention.
